Bible Translations & Bible Difficulties

Difficulties in the Bible is a subject which receives constant attention from the critics of the Christian faith. They usually put their case forward by implying that if there are difficulties in understanding or interpreting certain passages of the Bible, then this whole book should be rejected. It is most unfortunate that many Bible-believing people are taken in easily by this intimidation.

Why Four Gospels?

Shane Carrington

"Take your child to work day."

What a great idea! How many young people see Dad as a father, yard-mower, car-washer, and neighbor, but never see him in his role as employee? Truthfully, we all take on different jobs that say many things about who we are. Just viewing one facet of Dad’s life (husband, for example) tells only part of the story. The same is true of Jesus.

The Character of the Bible’s Witnesses

Jerry Blount

"You are My witnesses," declares the LORD, "and My servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe Me and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, and there will be none after Me. I, even I, am the LORD, and there is no savior besides Me" (Isaiah 43:10-11).

The Bible is Understandable

Dwight McGee

The multitude of different church buildings downtown in every city stands as a sad reminder of religious division and confusion. In man’s loss of unity, he is tempted to blame God and His word, the Bible. Men conclude that, since we do not understand the Bible, then the Bible cannot be understood. This is a most serious and fundamental error. Furthermore, it is a personal attack on either God’s goodness or His ability to communicate to men. The Bible declares plainly that it can be understood.

The Bible and The Old Wicker Coal Basket

Kenneth E. Thomas

The story is told of an old man who lived on a farm in the mountains of eastern Kentucky with his young grandson. Each morning, Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table reading from his old worn-out Bible. His grandson who wanted to be just like him tried to imitate him in any way he could.

The Benefits of Reading the Bible from Cover to Cover

Abraham Smith

In an earlier article, "Reading the Bible from Cover to Cover," we considered several factors that hinder us from reading the Bible in its entirety. Let us now examine the benefits we get from routinely reading all of the Bible.

Respect

Carey Scott

In that day a man will look to his Maker, and his eyes will have respect for the Holy One of Israel” (Isaiah 17:7).

A quality that is lacking in our society is respect. I think everyone would acknowledge such, but few think about it. Many wish it would return to our society, yet few are willing to make the efforts to restore it.

Reading the Bible from Cover to Cover

Abraham Smith

We should read the Bible from cover to cover. We should want to know what the Lord said.

Making Bible Reading a Priority

Abraham Smith

In earlier articles we studied scriptures which show us that we are obligated to read the Bible regularly. This includes the idea of reading the whole Bible. After all, Jesus said, “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God...” (Matt. 4:4). Those who truly love God and desire truth will read the Bible daily with a view toward reading it in its entirety on a regular basis.

Greek To Me

Roger Blackwelder

Some questions were raised recently about the value of having a knowledge of New Testament Greek.  Some have used arguments based on the translations of words to authorize immorality that the Bible clearly condemns.  This usage of the Greek is disturbing; it casts a shadow on an otherwise beneficial field of study.  I want to suggest to you that a knowledge of New Testament Greek is actually helpful for a couple of reasons:

I Can’t Make You Read This

Steven Harper

We are told within the revealed and written Word of God that God had established a plan for man’s salvation through Jesus Christ even before the foundation of the world (I Peter 1:20) or, as Paul said it, “before time began” (II Timothy 1:9). We are also told within the revealed and written Word of God that this plan was hidden for awhile from mankind (Ephesians 3:5, 6) and even from the prophets who foretold it (I Peter 1:10-12). Within the revealed and written Word of God, we are further told that this plan was revealed by the Holy Spirit through the apostles and prophets at the appropriate time (Ephesians 3:5; I Peter1:12). We are also told that when we read what is written within the revealed Word of God, we may understand it (Ephesians 3:4). We are also commanded to understand the will of God (Ephesians 5:17) and we are told that God desires that we all come to a knowledge of the truth (I Timothy 2:3, 4). If God desires we come to a knowledge of the truth, we can be assured it is possible; since He commands that we understand His will, we can be assured it is possible; and since God said we could understand it when we read it, we can be assured it is possible.

How May We Know the Bible is of God?

Abraham Smith

Can you trust your Bible? Is the Bible a book of God or a book of man? If we doubt the Bible’s trustworthiness, we lose it as
1)  an infallible standard of truth;
2) an authoritative basis for obedience or hope;
3)  "living and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword" (Hebrews 4:12); and
4) as a "discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart" (Hebrews 4:12)
