Tonight (April 9, 2006) the National Geographic Magazine is scheduled to present a television program that deals with an ancient work known as “The Gospel of Judas”. It is a 26-page manuscript (ca. AD 300) that is a Coptic translation of a Greek manuscript that is at least one hundred years older and was found in Egypt in the 1970s. The Copts are pre-Islamic inhabitants of Egypt and are believers in Christ. However, they have digressed in doctrine and practice to the extent they have their own pope. This “Gospel” presents a Judas that is doing the Lord’s bidding when he hands Him over to be crucified. At best this “show” will be a cynical attempt to gain “ratings” on TV and at worst it is – of course – an attempt by Satan to undermine faith in the Bible as the inspired Word of God. Were you alarmed to hear that another gospel has been discovered? Before we continue, let’s remember what Jesus told the twelve minus Judas.  “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13). That’s why Paul wrote by inspiration of God—twice, “But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:8-9).

Many today are sadly lacking in information as to the extra books found in the Catholic Bible and just exactly how they got there. Many Catholics sincerely wonder why and how we can say we have the Bible and yet do not include these extra books which are obviously to be found in theirs. What do they contain! Why are they there! Are they essential to salvation — and if not why not? These, and other questions, deserve answers, and we owe it to ourselves and to God and our fellow man to examine them so we might be able to give intelligent answers.

While The Da Vinci Code mania continues to develop and grow throughout the world and while "other gospels" and "alternative Christianities" have become popular, we now see revealed to us yet another "lost gospel," the Gospel of Judas. The National Geographic Society has done a good job of marketing this discovery and are profiting heavily from it; the media splash guarantees that it will be the topic at many a water cooler in offices throughout America. Since there is such a great commotion regarding this discovery, it is good to spend some time examining this Gospel of Judas.
