No one has any right to destroy human life for any reason because every person is created in the image of God. If any society decides to tamper with this principle for any reason, reverence and awe for life is destroyed. Gradually each and every value connected with the sanctity of human life is profaned. Ultimately human life becomes cheaper than animal life, and is terminated for the slightest possible reason. In this chapter we will consider some more question.
Q. Don’t you think that population explosion is the real culprit that is devaluating the worth of the human life ?
A Population-explosion has been portrayed as a culprit, but many scholars have shown that this is wrong. Unusual increase in population puts tremendous pressure on every nation, but it is not to be blamed for everything !
The value that a society places upon human life depends directly upon its moral and ethical values. Once there is a devaluation of these norms, human life is treated as worthless — whether the country is heavily populated or not !
The devaluation that human life has been suffering in the past decades is mainly due to the humanistic and selfish philosophies that have been capturing people’s minds and hearts. Unless these ideas change, human life will continue to be treated — whether the population-increase is controlled or not !
There are several species of birds and animals in our country that get better protection than this ! Killing these birds or animals brings in a stiff penalty plus several months of imprisonment. There are several organization which are devoted to prevent cruelty to animals. Thousands of individuals pour money into these organizations that fight for the welfare of plants and animals. There is immense joy and celebration when such animals multiply. Stories are written over how a single animal was saved from its cruel master. Yet the same people seem to become deaf when human life is destroyed.
Population-increase is not the real culprit. Out increasingly materialistic and utilitarian attitudes are to be blamed for it. Unless these attitudes change, human life is not going to be respected. Population-control is not the method of choice for restoring this value. Nor is abortion — destruction of life — the solution. Let us not blame it all upon population.
Q How shall we check the population explosion if abortion is not legalized?
A As I mentioned before, my aim in this book is not to discuss the need for population-control. There are plenty of evidences that the idea of population-bomb is a myth. But even if we grant it to be correct, then abortion is not the proper means for population-control. It is not ethically a neutral method. Plenty of methods are available that do not tamper with human life.
Abortion for family planning is the method adopted by the careless. Couples should remember that they are responsible for all their actions. This includes taking appropriate measures so that a new life is not formed. But if they do not take such measures, and if a conception results, they should not add murder to their carelessness. Two wrongs do not make one right. A criminal act cannot compensate for a careless attitude.
Interestingly in most of the countries where abortion is easily available, it is performed not for population control but rather to eliminate illegitimate conceptions. This means that it plays no absolute role in controlling population, but that it has become another method for hiding the fruits of immorality.
