Amazing Grace
Amazing Grace
By Jithvi Justin Ninan
Without a backward glance I’d fled
The things of yesterday
But now my present I so dread;
From guilt there’s no running away.
My brother’s blessing I did steal
Without a second thought,
Its consequences strongly feel,
Banished to this fated spot.
With just a stone for a pillow
And memories for relief,
Unobliging sleep my bed-fellow,
Keeps me awake with chastened grief.
Now with child-like candour-
Twin brother with innocence,
I recall my grandfather,
My childhood’s sweet influence.
His filial hugs & his serving hands,
His uncomplaining spirit,
His legacy as the grains of sand
Which I shall one day inherit.
But I’d rather have his patience now,
His trust in the unseen,
His implicit obedience & love
Steadfast through testings umpteen.
This happy pilgrim for God did part
With his kin & native town
And his love made him show his heart,
The day he laid his Isaac down.
His sacrifices made his faded face
So beautiful in God’s sight,
And growing old with such godly grace
He became once my guiding light.
He was always there to teach me;
His action louder than his word
And every lesson immortalized in memory
When eyes saw what ears had heard.
He looked for a better country
Whose builder-maker is God,
So was promised a portion without boundary
And God Himself was his reward.
Born blessed to be Abraham’s seed
And be a part of God’s design,
‘Tis grace more than what I plead ,
For God’s promises in Abraham are mine.
Faith & hope now stronger than shame,
Ease my burden of sin,
While taking my grandfather’s name,
Make peace with God within.
